 A winter tan is an awesome thing indeed (who says we have to be pale in the winter?!?) but you know that those tanning beds are terrible for you.  If the threat of cancer doesn't scare you off then think about all the wrinkles and hyperpigmentation they are giving you.  It is much safer, and just as attractive, to fake bake so that is why we are thrilled to be getting in Jan Iredale's brand new self-tanner Tantasia.   Tantasia is an all natural, gentle enough to use on your face, self-tanner that is applied gradually over a three day period to achieve a completely authentic looking tan.  Because it looks so fantastic, smells so pleasant, and is entirely gentle on the skin people are going ga-ga for it.  We will be getting Tantasia in Spascape virtually any day now - just give us a call first to see if we have it in yet.

Deborah Lippmann nail care

 

Deborah Lippmann is one of the most sought after manicurists in the world and we carry her very own, exclusive nail products here at Spascape Day Spa PineHills.  Deb Larson, our spa owner and intrepid leader, is always on the cutting edge of all things spa so when she heard that Deborah Lippmann polishes and products had no toluene, formaldehyde, DBP, and no animal testing she wasted zero time in bringing them on board.

Treat your body right

 

As I'm sure you all know, it is just crazy what stress can do to the body.  And that is why massage is not only a luxurious way to pamper yourself but is actually a way to heal and even prevent illness.  Massage can boost your immune system, decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol (cortisol can also cause weight gain), and release toxins that have built up in your body.  And if that hasn't convinced you here is what else the damaging effects of stress can do to your body:

Prolonged exposure to stress can elevate cholesterol which is bad for your heart.  It can increase glucose levels and lead to type 2 diabetes.  It definitely effects the central nervous system hampering your memory and learning ability, and can eventually even lead to depression.  And I'm sure we've all heard about how stress influences a woman's reproductive system possibly leading to difficulty conceiving, or even having more painful periods. Whew!  Just writing about all that is enough to stress me out!

microdermabrasion

 

If you could remove that outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells, you would see that just below the surface lies a fresher, younger looking face.  And that is precisely what microdermabrasion does.  After a series (which is highly recommended) of treatments your skin will be brighter, more evenly toned, and superficial scarring, discoloration, and fine lines and wrinkles may disappear.  It is a painless 45 minute procedure that is safe for most all skin types, even sensitive. We at Spascape Day Spa offer microdermabrasion treatments at virtually all our locations.   Today I went to the Scituate spa to have some done, and my skin has never felt smoother or softer.  Ever!

It just so happens that at the Scituate spa an independent esthetician named Cynthia Dean does the microdermabrasion.  She has her own room at the spa and she offers a special Clinical Microdermabrasion Facial.  Cynthia has been in holistic skincare since 1992 and has found for her facials a skincare line that works synergistically with her beliefs about skin and nature.  It is a holistic brand and is in fact based on Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It's pretty darn cool.

So what Cynthia did for this Clinical Microdermabrasion Facial was cleanse the skin with her holistic cleanser, then she microdermed my skin for almost a half hour because she included the neck area which is so crucial.  And FYI it wasn't uncomfortable in the least - it just felt like someone was vacuuming my skin with a teeny tiny vacuum.  

Next Cynthia massaged my face with her special lymphatic drainage machine (also no discomfort) which I love because it drains the excess fluid build up from my face.  Yay I get a skinny face!

And then she applied a soothing mask and while it sat and did its thing I got a lovely hand massage and foot reflexology.  Talk about pampering!  Cynthia has a deeply relaxing, healing touch.  

Finally she wrapped up the procedure with a moisturizer that represents the Chinese element "earth" because seasonally we are in the time of "earth" - and really I do like the idea of being in sync with nature.

the Hydralift facial

DIY Spa

 

They are predicting that another big snow storm is on its way and most people are planning on staying in.  Of course it is understandable that hazardous driving conditions might keep you from your facial at Spacape Day Spa so here are a few do-it-yourself spa treatments you can try at home using some basic ingredients found around the house.

 A hydrating, soothing, and smoothing mask - ideal for dry or sensitive skin - is to put a couple tablespoons of full-fat sour cream on your face for 15 - 20 minutes.  Not only is it non-irritating and wonderfully restorative but the lactic acid in it is mildly exfoliating as well.

Even more exfoliating is to freeze some apple juice in your ice cube trays.  Then rub the frozen juice gently over cleansed skin so that the malic acid (a type of alpha-hydroxy acid) can smooth and exfoliate the skin.  Plus the cold cube tightens the skin and feels like a mini face lift.

But the most exfoliating of all is to use that aspirin that is sitting around in your medicine cabinet.  Real aspirin (not Tylenol or Advil!) is made of salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy exfoliator.  So just crush up a few pills, mix with a tiny bit of water until it is a paste and apply to cleansed skin leaving it on anywhere fron five to ten minutes depending on your skin's sensitivity.

For the ultimate in hydration and nourishment, mash up ripe avocado and apply to cleansed skin for a 15 minute mask.  Unless your skin is oily, it is practically guaranteed to love it.  Most skin adores avocado either applied topically or eaten internally as it comes in a close second to the highly recommended Omega 3 fish oils.

For dry chapped lips a simple remedy is to put sone honey on a toothbrush and give your lips a light scrubbing. The honey is both soothing and hydrating, and the brush of course is exfoliating.

And finally, for depuffing swollen eyes, a compress of warm, damp, black-tea bags does the trick every time.  The caffeine in the tea helps to drain the excess fluid and helps stimulate microcirculation to reduce dark circles.  People in the know prefer it even over the cucumber slices trick.

So the holidays are over and you've got a stack of gift certificates just waiting to be used.  Someone was thoughtful enough to give you a Spascape Day Spa gift certificate and you can't wait to get down here and have a nice relaxing mani-pedi.  Which is fine, don't let me discourage you from that, but I have a few other ideas about what you can use your gift certificate for -  services that you may not automatically think of but that are such a treat you will be reminiscing about them for months afterward.
