I think we can all agree that February is a tough month.  Except for the avid skiers most of us are done with the snow and the cold.  And I don't know about you but I have been pulling out all the stops to make this month more cheerful.  I've been buying fresh flowers, wearing bright colors, and in a desperate attempt to mimic Summer I have been tanning.  NOT that horrible, dangerous, ill-advised tanning bed tanning but instead I do the spray tan and in a pinch the self-tanning gels.

I find that a winter tan is the perfect pick me up for the last dreary dregs of the season.  I revel in looking hale and hearty like I just stepped of the plane from Jamaica.  And for those of us who can't actually afford a few weeks on a tropical island, faking a vacation is the next best thing.  That's why I go to see Linda at Spascape Day Spa because they won the reader's Choice Award for best tanning Salon in Scituate and the Silver award for best tanning in the South Shore area.  Furthermore, Spascape uses Aviva Labs Sunless Spray Tan which is a natural looking, alcohol-free, hypoallergenic formula that can be customized to ensure a color and a look that is right for you.

You wouldn't believe how many women come into Spascape Day Spa and complain about their large pores when in reality, from my professional perspective, they actually have quite lovely skin.  Of course there are the people who truly do have enlarged pores and not just a case of perfectionism but whatever your situation there are a few things you should know:

The Golden Rule of Pores:  You cannot actually shrink the size of your pores but you can definitely improve their appearance.  You would do this by:

#1 Keep the pores completely clean.  Sebum can collect in the pore, pooling up and stretching the circumference.  If you have large pores I would highly recommend getting one of our Clairsonic cleansing brushes which will clean your skin six times greater than manual cleansing alone.  I promise you will notice a difference!

#2 Exfoliating.  You would want to do this as another measure of keeping the pores clean but also many times people's pores get larger as they age, and regular exfoliation can help speed up the cell turnover rate and thus slow down the aging process.  I would use one of our enzyme exfoliants such as GM Collin's Exfozyme or Intensive Exfoliating Gel because a harsh scrub can actually pull and abuse the pores making them more slack.

#3 Hydrate.  Many people associate large pores with oily skin but that is not always the case.  As I mentioned before merely the aging process can enlarge your pores.  But no matter what your skin type it can become dehydrated and then the pores will look like gaping holes dying for moisture.  And here's the real reason  to hydrate - hydration plumps up the skin, fine lines, wrinkles and pores too.  Moisture will make the walls of your enlarged pore look fat and closed up and smooth.  Yay!  If you have oily skin use a moisturizer designed for oily skin such as our GM Collin Hydramucine Optimal Gel and if you have normal to dry skin the sky's the limit.

#4 Retinol.  Don't let the word scare you - there are many other options besides the often harsh and drying prescription-strength formulas.  Retinol is the ultimate smoother-outer, pore-appearance-shrinker, skin-refiner.  I would definitely recommend using our Environ professional skincare line which contains gentle, user-friendly forms of retinol.  In fact the Environ products come in varying strengths of retinol so you can start out gentle and work your way up to the really high powered stuff.

#5 Use the right makeup.  The right makeup is out there for you.  Experiment with different foundations, some will definitely work better than others, and I would really look into a foundation primer that will fill in the pores and giving you a much smoother foundation application.  At Spascape we have a couple different foundations that tend to work well with large pores.  TheBalm has Time Balm a medium to heavy coverage dreamy-creamy foundation that will smooth things right over.  And for some people, the Jane Iredale mineral powder foundation can make your skin look as flawless and satiny as a pearl.

Pinehills grand opening

October is an important month for Spascape Day Spa.  It marks our three year anniversary and boy has it been a phenomenal three years!  In that time we have opened two locations in addition to our Scituate spa - one business in Dr. Delia's office in Duxbury, and one charming little spa in Mattapoisett.  And that is not all....we have also won numerous awards each year including the Best of Boston and Reader's Choice.  Why just the other day I counted twenty award plaques on the walls of our reception area! 

Considering October marks three years of success for us, it is significant that we will be opening a brand new fourth location at the beginning of the month.  On Friday October 1 we will be holding a VIP GRAND OPENING reception in our new Pinehills spa in Plymouth.  If you feel that you might be a VIP (and don't worry this is not a snooty spa) call Spascape to RSVP (781)545-1200.  The new spa is located at One Village Green North, Pinehills, Plymouth and the event will be held from 6-8 pm.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet the staff there, as well as representatives from the major skin care and body care brands that we carry.  Get complimentary consultations and smooze with the pros!  The local politicians, media, and neighborhood residents will be there and we would be thrilled to have you join the crowd too - the more the merrier!

Spascape favorites

 The Emmy Awards are coming up soon and I for one am excited.  I don't really watch many TV programs but who doesn't love an awards show?  The glitz!  The glamor!  And the picking of favorites!  Everyone loves to pick favorites, watch favorites, read about favorites, and I am no exception.  So in honor of the Emmy's I'd like to do a blog posting about Spascape Day Spa favorites:  what I,  the staff, and the clients here would pick as award-winners. We have expanded our retail section and are adding new products to our services thus there are many fabulous things to choose from and I hate to narrow it down but a favorite is, after all, a favorite so here it goes.....

 FAVORITE NAILS:  Brand-new and just in at the spa is the latest OPI Nails Swiss Collection and the colors are exceptional!  OPI has really outdone themselves this time with opulent gold, silver, blues, and - the hot color for this Fall - deep burgundies.  Clients are drawn to the new colors like Elizabeth Taylor is to jewels and they are walking out our door infatuated with their sensational new manicures and pedicures.  If you don't have the time for one of our sumptuous Spascape mani-pedis come in a and buy a bottle of Swiss Collection polish for a DIY at home.  My own personal pick for a color winner is the ski teal you drop, but I think Spascape owner and fearless leader Deb Larson's favorite is the Cuckoo for this color.

FAVORITE TECHNOLOGY:  Now that we carry Clairsonic products at the spa, all our estheticians have bought themselves the new Clairsonic Opal Sonic Infusion System.  It was love at first sight for all of us when this little device was demonstrated at the training.  The Opal is a small hand-held, oval-shaped, instrument that uses sonic technology to penetrate anti-aging eye serum into your eye area for instant as well as long-term results.  The sonic technology is far more effective at penetrating than manual application alone and not only does it radically reduce fine lines and wrinkles but it reduces puffiness and dark circles as well.  Needless to say our skincare professionals were extremely impressed so stop by Spascape to pick one up for yourself - we're sure you will think it's a winner too!

FAVORITE TAN:  If you are wanting a spray tan I can't imagine going anywhere other than Spascape Day Spa. Our technicians are highly skilled,  we use only Aviva all organic tanning solution, and if that's not exceptional enough, we won the Reader's Choice Award for #1 tanning salon in Scituate, and the Silver Award for the entire region so our clients obviously think we are pretty great too.  You may not be familiar with the Aviva spray tan products so let me just tell you that they are all natural, hypo-allergenic, paraben-free, and made right here in Massachusetts.  Pretty cool.  And it's still Summer folks so it's not too late to get your fake bake on.  I recommend calling to make an appointment with Linda - she's a winner!

FAVORITE SKINCARE: The mainstay of our facials are done with GM Collin products and there is a very good reason for this.  GM Collin delivers results.  We retail their products as well so that you can achieve the same remarkable results at home, and what I want to talk about here is my current favorite GM Collin product the H50 Therapy Cream.  As a matter of fact Robin, our intrepid front-desk manager, and I both are HUGE fans of this moisturizer as we have very dry, sensitive skin.  The H50 Therapy cream is specifically designed for mature skin that is peri-menopausal, menopausal, or post-menopausal, but as neither Robin nor I quite fit into any of those categories I can confidently recommend this moisturizer for clients with just dry skin as well.  True, it has soy and wild yam in it for the hormonal changes, and mega peptides for chronological and environmental aging, but bottom line it is a luxurious, ultra-emollient, luscious-smelling, cream that gives dry skin a radiant glow and firm tone all day long.  Personally, in the Summer I only use it as a night cream but come Winter I know that it will be the perfect anti-dote to my dull, dry, irritated Winter skin.

FAVORITE HEALING:  If you have ever had a massage with aromatherapy you will know that it creates a perfect adjunct to the healing process.  Which is why our massage therapists, and occasionally even our estheticians, sometimes like to add a BC Essentials essential oil blend to the service.  BC Essentials is a fantastic local company that truly makes the best essential oil blends I have ever worked with.  They make a variety of blends for everything from Relaxation, to Sinus Relief, to Uplifting and boy do these babies get the job done!  They, and all their essential oil lotions, scrubs, and candles, sell specatularly well around here and when I had a knee injury, I bought their Aches & Pains formula (actually their best-seller) from our retail salon and it did more to relieve my discomfort than anything else anyone prescribed. It definitely gets my vote!

 Spascape Day Spa is a six time Reader's Choice Award winner this year!  We usually win Reader's Choice Awards every year, and this year there are six, count 'em SIX! I don't mean to say anything poorly about anyone else but there are no other day spas in the area with as many awards.  People are talking all about it.

For Best Manicure/Pedicure we were voted #1 in Scituate, and won the Gold Award for the entire region.

For Best Day Spa or Massage we were voted #1 in Scitutate, and won the Silver Award for the entire region.

For Best Tanning Salon we were voted #1 in Scituate, and won the Silver Award for the entire region.
